This year, we celebrated our fifth birthday here at Meantime.

Things move quickly in the world of IT and in those five years there have been many developments: we’ve witnessed the web 2.0 explosion and the impact it’s had on the way we communicate; we’ve seen a huge increase in the availability of open source technology; the e-commerce sector has seen the introduction of PCI (Payment Card Industry) compliancy; and web accessibility has become the rule rather than the exception, enabling more people than ever to browse the web.
But the one thing that’s remained the same is our commitment to deliver high quality IT systems on time, on spec and on budget. And part of that commitment is to ensure that we’re completely up to date with every development, both good and bad, that could have an effect on the IT systems you rely on to run your business.

So this, the first of our monthly newsletters, will highlight the issues that everyone who runs web-based systems, from a brochure site to an e-commerce operation, needs to be aware of. In coming issues we’ll bring you our news, client case studies and a round-up of our favourite stories from the world of IT over the last few weeks.
We hope you find it informative and useful.
This issue's round up:
Google and TV
Comment: "As we have seen with the record companies fighting against piracy, so it seemed the TV companies would battle with YouTube. Here we see that tide beginning to turn with Channel 4 engaging with the Google-owned YouTube, despite having its own delivery mechanism."
Google and Music
Comment: "Google’s wealth and technical resources mean its ability to forge relationships and grow new businesses is unstoppable, at least for the immediate future. Now they’ve turned their attention to music. With Amazon offering cheaper, non-DRM’d MP3s, they seemed the logical challenger to iTunes but Google’s muscle may see them taking that role."
Windows 7
Comment: "Not many people will have missed the launch of Windows 7 but the media reaction has been far more favourable than it was towards Vista. Indeed, many businesses "stalled" on XP but the signs are that there is an appetite to move to Windows 7. Certainly our experience at Meantime indicates there is every reason to embrace the new operating system".
Twitter deal with Microsoft and Google
Comment: "October 21st was an exciting day for fans of Twitter, when the financially unseaworthy web phenomenon dramatically proved that it could be monetised by announcing lucrative deals with Microsoft and then Google. Very much the Marmite of the web, Twitter is a an application that polarises opinion. We’ve dipped a toe into its waters at twitter.com/MeantimeIT."
Change to domain names
Comment: "It’s easy to talk about the web as a "global village", whilst ignoring the fact that it’s managed by Latin characters. All that is set to change now as Icann – which coordinates the Internet’s naming system – has approved the introduction of internet addresses consisting entirely of non-Latin characters."
