Meantime - business systems that count

Meantime's lowdown
on IT must haves in 2010

Last month, we looked briefly at what had happened in the world of IT in the five years that Meantime's been providing IT solutions on time, on spec and on budget. This month we'll look at what's in store at the dawn of a new decade.

Towards the end of 2009 we had Windows 7 from Microsoft and, for companies who have 'rested' on Windows XP, this is a good opportunity to upgrade and one that shouldn't be missed. Although Google is to be applauded for its drive to diversify rather than simply resting on its search engine, we've seen only a slow take up of Google Docs and the guarded release of Google Wave has, so far, had a lukewarm reception.

Still to come from the big players, we have Microsoft's Office 2010, Apple's iTablet, and Google's Chrome operating system to look forward to, as well as their Nexus One phone, using their Android OS for mobile. Office 2010 has been released as a beta test version, and within it the surprisingly underused Microsoft Groove has been rebranded Sharepoint WorkSpace - perhaps this will see the very useful remote file sharing space utilised more than has been so far.

The industry and the web being what they are, there'll be plenty of surprises to come. But one certainty is that every serious business needs a web presence, and that is increasingly including data storage and maintenance. We'll be here throughout the year to guide you through the IT minefield and keep you reliably informed of the developments you really need - and the ones you really don't.

Happy new year!

This issue's round up:

Nexus One

Comment: "Google's keenly anticipated rival to the iPhone, running its own Android operating system, was released last week. We remain unconvinced that it's better than the iPhone, although it will certainly be bought by Apple deniers, Linux fans and those who don't want to be one of the herd. However, as with everything Google do, it's one to watch."

Office 2010

Comment: "The latest release of the world's most popular office package is coming soon. Get a preview or even download a trial version from here, but it is only a beta - i.e. still in test - so don't use it for anything business critical."

iTablet

Comment: "Rumours abound and hard facts are thin on the ground but there's no doubt that the iTablet will take the iPhone's smart interface and crank it up a notch or two in terms of usability, if only because it's bigger."

'Google tax'

Comment: "Governments don't like companies making large sums of money if they aren't getting a slice and the French government has cracked and made its bid for some crumbs from Google's table. Initially sweetening the PR by promising the income to the arts, if they are successful, then no doubt this will be diverted into the public purse."
