Meantime - business systems that count

Clever systems, not cuts, are the way to make savings

When businesses enjoy growth, the usual way to facilitiate it is to hire additional people to take on the extra load. So it comes as no surprise that when the growth slows or goes into reverse, the first step owners take is to let go of the staff that were needed when times were good.

This can have an adverse effect in many ways. Obviously the people who lose their jobs are devastated, but the staff who are left behind are also affected. They take on more work for no more pay, perhaps they even need to take a pay cut just to keep their jobs. Redundancies create an air of unease, staff morale sinks and the workplace isn't such a happy, productive place, creating an environment that makes it even harder to get the business back into the black.

If you're in the very unfortunate position of having to cut back, finding the money to invest in bespoke software can seem frivolous. You may think your business isn't big enough, doesn't make enough money, or isn't unique enough to warrant investing into a system which is built around how you work. But investing into a clever system that will take on repetitive tasks and automate your business processes can provide much more benefit than just chopping staffing budgets in half and expecting everyone to do twice as much. Serious businesses will bite the bullet and make the investment into a system that will bring long-term efficiencies and future proof their business.

And with the systems in place to take care of the administration, the staff that have helped to make your business what it is will be free to concentrate on bringing in work that will get the business back on its feet.

There are simple efficiencies which can be introduced into any business by deploying clever software - and it doesn't have to break the bank. Read our latest advice guide to see where changes can be made that will contribute to a positive future for your business and your staff, and read the case studies from the companies we've helped to do just that.

Net neutrality, whereby all data is treated equally and moved around the Internet at the same speed, is a fundamental aspect of how the Internet works today. Ed Vaizey MP has listened too closely to those companies that have a vested interest in charging for the distribution of content. It's worth paying attention to this now or, before you know it, you'll be paying extra to watch YouTube or iPlayer:

Sometimes very significant changes to your world can happen right under your nose. Web developers are getting very excited about HTML 5 and while that may sound nerdy, it will change the way you use the web. There is an interesting, if lengthy, article about it here http://meantime.co.uk/iNAge7elew and you can see this new technology work here http://meantime.co.uk/RIzAGApuyu The site generates a music video incorporating any road you tell it. It is, in fact, a little unnerving, but it clearly demonstrates the power of web at this point in time.

As we reported in our last issue, many businesses are yet to address the issue of website accessibility. The charity Citizens Online has launched Fix The Web, a scheme that will let web users report sites that don't consider disabled or older users - and with around six million of them in the UK, that's a lot of dissatisfied customers:

Evernote gives you a straightforward way to store any information from the Web, whatever device or platform you are using, and then access it easily at your leisure. For example, if you are a Twitter user, you can keep any tweet simply by re-tweeting it with @myen at the end. It will then be stored in your Evernote account.

The iphone has finally made it. Forget the worldwide sales, you've never truly made it until you've been on Sesame Street, and the iphone has reached those halcyon heights. We've had Pierce Brosnan dressed as a prawn and Manamanah; now we have There's An App For That. Today's show is brought to you by the letter 'i'.
