What presents did IT deliver this year?

Who gave the novelty ties and who delivered the Cartier watch?
It's been a year of bad news and bad decisions, not least in the world of IT with Google Street Cars 'mistakenly' gathering data from unsecured wireless networks and Apple's antenna gaff, when Steve Jobs boasted that the new iPhone was the most precise thing they'd ever made. There was just a small problem if you wanted to hold it while you made a call.

But amongst the doom and gloom there were developments in IT to keep those with even the vaguest interest in technology happy.

Windows 7
After the lukewarm reception given to Vista, Microsoft is back on form with Windows 7. It's slick, quick and far less memory hungry than Vista or XP and a vast improvement as an operating system.

Android for mobile phones and tablets
Android has really announced itself as a contender to the iPhone and Blackberry's RIM as the smartphone leader and is shipping vast numbers of units. And the Android-operated HTC Desire is quietly becoming the must-have mobile with very little hype or fanfare, enjoying popularity simply because it's a great phone with a fantastic operating system.

HTML 5
The cherry on the IT cake in 2010 is HTML5. Flash animation has long been a bugbear of both web developers and users - it's not compatible with search engines and can't be displayed on an iphone, causes problems with accessibility and, not least, takes an age to load. HTML5 allows animation, moving imagery and interactive content without the use of plug-in software, giving developers much greater freedom when it comes to web content and making multi-media content both accessible and searchable.
