IT can be an expensive business, and when budgets are being pared down to the bare minimum it's important to get it right first time. There are too many stories of IT projects going massively over budget and past deadline, with good money being thrown after bad for systems that never quite get it right.
While there's no denying that some elements of IT are complex and best left to the experts, there are people who'd have you believe that absolutely everything IT related is a complicated science to be avoided at all costs. These people usually have a vested interest in you handing over your hard-earned cash for simple tasks that could just as easily be done in-house.
Armed with a basic knowledge of what's possible and what isn't, it can be easy to separate unscrupulous profiteers from the consultants or companies with a genuine interest in providing you with what's best, at a price that's right.
Our latest advice guide explodes some common IT myths and explains how you can negotiate the digital maze to find your way around everything from SEO to social media. Read it here.

Most of us already rely on our mobile phones to check emails, take photographs and, occasionally, make calls. But soon we may be even more lost without our phones thanks to the latest mobile development: Near Field Communication (NFC). The addition of a chip to your handset will enable you to wave your mobile in front of a paypoint and pay for items up to £15. You'll see just how much you use it when you get your monthly bill!

We've mentioned before that search engine optimisation (SEO) is not a one off job. Generally speaking a well-built site with good, regularly updated content will do well on Google and the other search engines but there are aspects that Google, in particular, decides to favour or punish, changing its mind with some regularity. It appears that those ancient relics of SEO, the keywords, have slipped further into the bad books.

Lies, damn lies, and statistics; and now, Correlated. The idea behind the site is to discover surprising correlations between seemingly unrelated things; for example, did you know that 51 percent of people who prefer salty snacks also prefer that their toilet paper hang close to the wall, compared with 27 percent of people in general? No, us either. By answering each day's survey question you too can become a statistic in the issues that REALLY matter.

A bit of fun for a Friday afternoon. This site lets you create a road layout, add a few features, and then send a couple of cars to drive around your map, playing different sounds as they pass each object www.isleoftune.com |
