Why do large IT projects fail?

In recent news we have been told that the NHS 'National IT' project has been dropped at an estimated cost of £12 billion. The system was originally expected to cost £2.3 billion. However, officials involved in the programme have been quoted in the media estimating the final cost might be as high as £20 billion.

Then there's the failed Fire Service IT project. The project wasted a minimum of £496m as a result of failure to deliver, and may have wasted a further £180m according to the National Audit Office.

Perhaps the worst case is Horizon, the Post Office's automation system. Apparently the system has shown financial shortfalls prompting accusations of theft leading to prosecutions for Post Office employees. For now the Post Office is denying there are issues with Horizon, but it's possible the system has not only wasted billions but is also responsible for the imprisonment of innocent people.

Whether financial or personal the repercussions of a failed IT project can be devastating to say the least. Through a series of blogs Fenner will be asking the question, why do large IT projects fail?

A computer virus has infected computers used by pilots who fly US drones remotely in places such as Iraq and Afghanistan. Whilst they are not sure if the virus is benign, these virus types actually capture the keystrokes from a user's machine, meaning enemies potentially know exactly what they are doing. So far, the virus has repelled attempts to wipe it from the infected machines. - http://meantime.co.uk/U5uNIJeMEy
